最近，一些据说是英国著名作家毛姆的写作建议在网上流传。有人这么说:

1. 你必须比观众先感到无聊。

2. 作者的座右铭必须是:能删就删，能删就删，能直达观众注意力的顶点。

这样，毛姆就是控制读者注意力的人。

作为英国现代文学史上创作力强的多产作家，他的重要作品和近100部短篇小说都集中在20世纪20年代和30年代，但直到70岁，他仍然写了一部轰动一时的畅销小说《刀锋》（1944）。

在他丰富的作品中，除了情节之外，还有许多连珠妙语。他曾写道：

“Impropriety is the soul of wit.”

他有敏锐的洞察力，善于分析人们的内心世界。它的笔像一把解剖刀，可以挖掘人们内心深处的思想活动。从这些引言中可以看出他的智慧。

他把阅读视为生活压力下的休息场所。

“To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life.”

如果你养成了阅读习惯，你就会在生活中的许多痛苦之外为自己创造一个避难所。

毛姆探索了艺术的产生与本质、个性与天才的关系、艺术家与社会的矛盾等发人深省的问题。

"I have an idea that some men are born out of their due place. Accident has cast them amid certain surroundings, but they have always a nostalgia for a home they know not. They are strangers in their birthplace, and the leafy lanes they have known from childhood or the populous streets in which they have played, remain but a place of passage."

但事实上，在阅读了翻译傅唯慈的翻译后，你会发现毛姆讽刺地嘲笑鱼和熊掌，我只需要熊掌。原文是：
