人们通常用cold snap、cold wave、cold front、cold spell表达寒潮。寒潮是指寒潮。strong cold air(强冷空气)亚洲大陆西部或西北部入侵中国时的强冷天气过程，通常发生在秋末、冬季和初春。

范围大的时候cold air mass(冷空气团)在一定程度上，会大规模向南入侵，形成寒潮天气。寒潮地面高压前端一般有一个cold front(冷锋)。寒潮过后，当地会受到影响low pressure area(低压)控制。

截至1月6日18时55分，北京南郊观象台气温为-17.3℃，低于2010年的-16.7℃，在过去的20年里低（a record low in 20 years）。

据气象专家介绍，这种由风引起的体感温度低于实际温度的现象被称为风寒效应（wind-chill effect）”。

在大多数情况下，人的体温会高于周围环境（the human body temperature is normally higher than the ambient temperature），在无风或微风的情况下，人体周围的空气分子交换非常弱，在人体和自然空气之间形成了相对稳定的过渡层。因为空气是热的不良导体（air is a poor conductor of heat），这种过渡层在靠近人体的表面起到保暖作用。

然而，当空气流动迅速时，人体周围的空气保温层不断被新的冷空气所取代（the protective air barrier around the body is constantly replaced by new cold air），并带走热量。风速越大，人体失去的热量越快，人就越冷。

从大量的科学实验中，人们发现了风速与人体冷暖的关系（the relationship between wind speed and the feeling of temperature），并大致计算出当温度为0时的数据℃风力每增加2级，人的寒冷感会下降3~5℃；气温在0℃下面，风每增加2级，人的寒冷感就会下降6~8℃。

然而，风寒只发生在暴露在衣服外的皮肤上（bare skin），因此，只要选择合适的衣服，尽量减少裸露的皮肤，风寒效果就能降到最低。
